4-Characteristics of STEM Curriculum

This is a great place to tell people more about yourself and peak their interest.

As part of the SPIRE curriculum, students also complete the Georgia DOE engineering career pathway.

Freshman SPIRE students learned about cellular transport by transforming themselves into the role of emergency room doctors. When presented with a patient exhibiting certain skills, the SPIRE students used their researched knowledge to ask questions and pinpoint the cause of the patient's symptoms. Once a correct diagnosis was made, the roles shifted: the "patients" were actually medical students from the Georgia campus of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and these future doctors served as mentors to the ninth graders. In this partnership project, the PCOM students taught SPIRE students further specifics about cell transport, the causes of the ailments, and ways to prevent these situations from occurring; they also learned about medical school and what it takes to get there and get through it. As a result of this project, the two schools have formed a partnership allowing SPIRE students access to the knowledge and mentorship of a medical student. One SPIRE student said, "This experience was really important to me because I want to go to medical school one day, and now I feel like I know what's coming at me to get there. It was also cool to feel like we had a partner on this project who helped us along the way." The ongoing relationship will allow future students to benefit from these interactions for years to come.
